Our Warmest Welcome

The Hartenstein family is proud to be celebrating over 130 years and five generations in funeral service. Beginning over a century ago in New Freedom with the vision of cabinetmaker George Lewis Hartenstein, and continuing today with a rich heritage and a reputation for exceptional service, J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc. is committed to companioning grieving families and children and investing in and preserving our hometown communities.

News & Events
The professional caregiving team at Hartenstein's recognizes that children grieve and believe they should be given the choice to participate in the memorialization process. Dr. Alan Wolfelt, an author and educator of children's grief explains that, “Anyone old enough to love is old enough to grieve." In support of grieving children everywhere, please join us by wearing blue on November 19, 2015 to raise awareness about the impact that the death of a loved one has in the life of a child. All of us at Hartenstein's believe that by providing opportunities for support and safe places where children are invited to openly and authentically mourn is essential to healing. Visit for more information about helping bereaved children hold on to hope.
We are so pleased with how wonderful my Mom looked. All the folks who saw her the last couple of months were very impressed as well. I can't thank you enough for your professionalism and compassion! Our families have been coming there since I've been a little girl. There is no one else I would ever trust with my loved one.
